From natural gas to next-generation skin care formulations

We’ve recently published our new peer-reviewed research in Applied Sciences, in collaboration with Dongduk Women's University in Seoul.

Our study looks at how Shell GTL SaraCare waxes, made from natural gas using the Fischer–Tropsch (FT) process, perform as alternatives to traditional waxes in cosmetics.

Here’s what we found:

  • All FT wax formulations caused no irritation in clinical patch tests on humans
  • Shell GTL SaraCare BW scored 1.08 on the orthorhombic scale, better than beeswax (0.85) and carnauba wax (0.80)
  • Formulas with Shell GTL SaraCare BW helped skin recover by reducing water loss in damaged skin barriers
  • Tunable chain lengths allow precise control over melting point and texture, allowing you to make products that range from light to rich and protective

These results show Shell GTL SaraCare waxes are versatile and backed by science, great for the next wave of skincare products.

Wax ingredients

We offer a comprehensive range of waxes and specialized oils to suit every need, starting from small hydrocarbon molecules to larger molecules like polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) waxes. The properties of these waxes range from low viscosity or a very narrow cut wax to those with highly complex molecular structures. These waxes are used in different applications including adhesives and sealants, candles, wax blending, paving and roofing, inks and coatings, personal care and pharma, polymers and emulsion.
