Recovering hidden energy in lower-energy diets
Reducing added oil is one of the most direct ways for feed producers to lower formulation costs. However, when oil inclusion falls below 3%, dietary energy becomes increasingly dependent on lipids inherently present in raw materials such as soybean meal, wheat, and corn.
These inherent lipid fractions are less accessible and often underutilised without effective emulsification. Lipidol®, a distinct blend of lysophospholipids and phospholipids, interacts with lipids from a wide range of feed ingredients, improving lipid dispersion and micelle formation to enhance fat utilisation in reduced-oil formulations.
In a broiler trial conducted in Poland, dietary energy was reduced by 70 kcal/kg by lowering oil inclusion to ≤2% (NC). With Lipidol® Ultra supplementation (NC+Lipidol Ultra), growth performance and feed efficiency were fully maintained compared to the higher oil-energy control (PC).
This translated into estimated cost savings of €4 per tonne, demonstrating a practical approach to cost-effective diet reformulation through improved fat utilisation.
